Flinders St Station at the corner of Flinders St and Swanston St is a Melbourne icon. Within and around the station are many interesting things to discover and enjoy. One of these is a favourite of mine, the Flinders Street Station Mural, created in 1986 by artist Mirka Mora. The mural is on the inside wall at the Yarra river end of the station next to Clocks Restaurant. Only the central panel is a mosaic, with the decorative upper frieze being painted and the lower border being painted with low-relief outlines.
Mirka Mora (born 1928) is a prominent French-born Australian visual artist who has contributed significantly to the development of Contemporary Art in Australia. Her work includes painting, sculpture and mosaics. She is a noted colourist and symbolist. Her paintings are often bright and bold, drawing heavily on a stable of recurring motifs - innocent, wide-eyed children, angels, dogs, cats, snakes and birds. This mural is typical fo her work and one can find endless sources of delight and amusement in its contemplation.

A beautiful touch of colour to this end of the station Nick - I've walked right by here a few times but never stopped to admire this beautiful mural.
ReplyDeleteFabulous! This colorful mural is really attractive, Nick. I hope to see it with my eyes directly some day.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful mural.
ReplyDeleteI like the colours and playfulness of the mural. Seems like it should be great for lifting the spirits of anyone who sees it.
ReplyDeleteGreat place. Nice captures!
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.
I have never seen these! Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteI really like public art. This mural is so bright and lovely. I'm sure it brings smiles to the people who pass it. :)
ReplyDeleteI love all the colours and wonderful images in this one!
ReplyDeleteThere is so much to see in these. There should be a bench positioned in front, like at a gallery for people to rest and admire.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, you could spend a lot of time discovering the nuances within this mural. The images have a naive quality but interesting references to mythology and Aboriginal art. No wonder it's a favorite of yours. Thank you for participating in Monday Mural. Hopefully there are other murals in Melbourne you'd like to share with us.
ReplyDeleteMirka Mora will always have the child within her, and will always be delighted & be a delight.
