ROYAL MELBOURNE HOSPITAL - TAPESTRY

This tapestry hangs in the foyer of the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) is the second to be commissioned for the ‘Delacombe Tapestry Project’, an initiative set up by the Tapestry Foundation of Australia as a tribute to Lady Delacombe, wife of the former Governor of Victoria, who was instrumental in the establishment of the Australian Tapestry Workshop (ATW) in 1976.

The tapestry represents a collaboration between the Victorian College of the Arts, The Royal Melbourne Hospital and the ATW. The designing artist, Merrin Eirth, completed a three-month residency at the RMH to create the artwork for this tapestry, which reflects her perceptions of the hospital environment, and the sounds, sights and values that surrounded her during that time.

"Healing Threads" - 2007 by artist Merrin Eirth. 2 x 4 metres. Weavers: Chris Cochius, Louise King, Rebecca Moulton, Emma Sulzer.

  2. It's a good thing you told us this is a tapestry. I never would have figured it out. That makes the intricacy of the design even more impressive. I would love to ask her what all the small symbols mean to her. Especially the clocks with no hands. This piece must surely engage visitors, and possibly take their minds off any worries, at least for a while. Thanks for contributing to Monday Mural.

  6. This is such a dying art, hard to justify the price, considering the hours that go into it. So glad to see that someone in your neighborhood is still working in this medium, and obviously selling as well. Thanks for sharing.
