FISH BY MIKE MAKA

Mike Maka is a painter who works in a variety of media including street art, canvas and illustration. He has travelled and created work around the world, painting the Berlin Wall to the River Ganges. He received a scholarship at 20 to study art in New York, which led to working as a bike messenger for 10 years in 10 cities, and facilitating him to leave his mark on many walls.

Mike has exhibited extensively through Australia as well as participating in group shows in Brazil, Japan and New York,  and has works in private and public collections locally and abroad, including some works that have been acquired by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.

His work is preoccupied with the interface between man, beast and machine. Presenting a visual riot that stimulates the mind, Mike’s art conveys an imperative message to those confined in the concrete jungle to stay connected to the animal within them that lives in the natural world. He is based in Melbourne Australia. This delightfully whimsical fish mural is painted on tilework outside a Clearance Centre on Smith St, the shop itself being as quirky and selling a variety of used and new outlandish gear and merchandise, trash and treasure. This shop is typical of the neighbourhood, which is very much "alternative".

This post is part of the Monday Murals meme.

  1. There's something fishy about this mural:-) If I didn't know better I would of said this street view was in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

  5. Definitely eye fetching. I like the "peep holes" that reveal the skeletal structure beneath that green skin. I visited his blog and see that a lot of his works are more complex and disquieting. BTW, the Clearance Centre is my kind of place. Never know what treasures you'll find within. Thanks for contributing to Monday Mural.
