ARTEMIS LANE, CITY

Artemis, goddess of the moon, nature and the hunt, was the daughter of Zeus and Leto and one of the twelve Olympians of Greek mythology. This lane in the QV shopping centre in the City was named to acknowledge Melbourne's Greek Community, and in particular the presence of several Greek restaurants on Lonsdale Street, nearby.

Artemis Lane is one of the new lanes created for the QV shopping complex between Swanston, Russell, Lonsdale and Little Lonsdale streets. It runs east-west off Russell Street towards QV square. The creation of new lanes such as Artemis Lane represents a contemporary trend in corporate retail development. Rob Adams, director of design and urban environment for the City of Melbourne, claims: 'There's been a real recognition that as far as retail, culture and experience, the laneways are as important as some of the bigger developments and streets'.

These two murals are in keeping with the name of the lane and brighten un an otherwise sterile, concrete wall. There are some interesting shops in the lane, including the Flower Temple about which I have posted here before.

This post is part of the Monday Murals meme,
and also part of the Mandarin Orange Monday meme.

  1. The artist was very creative painting the archer. He has used the space well. The archer appears to be launching his arrow through a window.

  3. Painting the archer to overlap the ridge on the wall gives it a 3D effect.

  6. Interesting murals, and very nice work, I must agree with your director of design and urban development, those lane ways look like a vital part of making an area feel more human in scale.

  8. These murals literally brighten this laneway. Who wouldn't be cheered by giant daffodils nodding at passersby. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
