ELIZABETH ST, CITY

This view of Elizabeth St, looking North from Flinders St in the City, shows a couple of centuries of Melbourne architecture condensed in one image. Original Victorian and Edwardian buildings, 1920s, 1930s and 1940s architecture as well as the "modern wave of buildings from 1950s-1970s. New high rises from the later part of the last century also clearly prominent.

In the mid-left of the photo, a "modern" mural on a 1950s building: Melbourne was all a buzz with Olympic Pride in 1956. Richard Beck was a graphic designer engaged to design the official commemorative Olympic Poster, a stamp, a map and was engaged by CUB (Carlton & United Breweries) to do a mural of "beer glasses toasting". This great mural still survives on this corner of Elizabeth & Flinders Sts...
