The Melbourne Arts Precinct is a series of galleries, performing arts venues and spaces in Melbourne. The precinct is situated less than 1 km from the Melbourne city centre in Southbank and is centred around, and near, St Kilda Road. It differs from the Melbourne theatre district in the city centre, as most of the galleries and venues in the precinct are publicly funded.
Two statue groups by sculptor Cole Sopov were moved in 2001 to their current prominent location overlooking the lawn area between the Theatres Building and Hamer Hall. Cole Sopov was born in Greece in 1938, and studied fine arts in Europe before immigrating to Australia in 1971. From 1973 to 1974 he attended the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, before being appointed lecturer in Fine Arts at Monash University from 1977 to 1995. Sopov was commissioned by John Truscott in 1983-84 to create these two groups of figures, ‘Family of Man I’ and ‘Family of Man II’.

Lovely art pieces.
ReplyDeleteInteresting pieces!! Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. If aliens arrive and see some of our art after we are gone they will surely wonder what we are all about. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteA fine piece of art. Even though the buildings behind are much bigger, compared to the sculpture they become small. Great second image.
ReplyDeleteThese are great pieces, Nick!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favourite parts of town.
