KANE'S BRIDGE AT STUDLEY PARK

Studley Park is part of the 642-acre Yarra Bend Park and the Yarra River runs across the park. It is located 4 km north-east of the Melbourne CBD in the suburb of Kew.

Kane's Bridge was built in 1929 to link Studley Park and Yarra Bend Park. It was washed away by the floods in 1934 and rebuilt in 1935. The bridge was named after Councillor T J Kane of Collingwood, who was a member of the Yarra Bend Management Committee. It is a suspension bridge and looks quite solid and substantial. However, like all suspension bridges it does vibrate and sway. While we were crossing it, a group of 5-6 joggers ran past and we could feel the bridge move quite substantially in response to the rhythm of their footfall.

and also part of the Sunday Bridges meme.

  2. Great post as usual, Nick! You are so right about the swaying of the suspension bridges. It can be very disconcerting to walkers! When the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco turned 74, they closed the bridge to vehicular traffic on the anniversary date of the bridge's opening and allowed walkers on the roadway. The California Highway Patrol had officers at both ends of the bridge controlling the number of walkers on the bridge at one time so as to minimize the sway created by the walkers. «Louis» thanks you for contributing this to Sunday Bridges.

In the event that he forgot to tell you, his "Gearhead Tuesday" post will be on the Chysler Valiant Charger. He's planning a post on your Utes, too.

  3. It's a pretty bridge, but I suspect I wouldn't enjoy the swaying.

  6. I have crossed this bridge many many times... The gentle swinging is calming for the stressed pedestrians soul.

  7. Lovely bridge though that park is haunted . A bit eerie at night and a few weirdos hang around that area . Not a place to be after dark on your own

  8. My father's favourite place as a boy. He was born in 1924. Boating on and swimming in the river were commonplace then.
