MONTSALVAT

Montsalvat is an artists' colony in Melbourne's Northeaster outer suburb, Eltham, established in 1934, and home to over a dozen buildings set amongst verdant established gardens. The colony of Montsalvat has a detailed history that reflects the life of Justus Jörgensen and his friends and family. Its buildings and gardens are steeped in the art and culture of Melbourne and its surroundings.

Architecturally Montsalvat has much in common with a simple French village in Provence, with a mix of rustic architectural styles. Justus Jörgensen was an architect and as a former student of Max Meldrum had spent many happy hours painting around Eltham. In 1934 Jörgensen purchased land and with his friends and students commenced the buildings that became Montsalvat, 26kms from Melbourne.

The grounds and buildings are currently used for exhibitions, performances, conferences, seminars, weddings and receptions; however, artists working in a variety of mediums continue to reside in Montsalvat. Several classes on various disciplines of art are offered year round by the resident artists. Today Montsalvat is a popular tourist attraction and the entire complex is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

It was founded by architect and artist Justus  Jörgensen (1893-1975) in 1934. It is home to a small hamlet of various buildings, houses and halls set amongst extensive established gardens. The colony of Montsalvat reflects very much the life of Justus Jörgensen and his friends and family.

Its buildings and gardens are stepped in the art and culture of Melbourne and its surroundings. 

Architecturally, Montsalvat has much in common with a simple French village in Provence with a mix of rustic architectural styles.   Justus Jörgensen was an architect and as a former student of Max Meldrum had spent many happy hours painting around Eltham. Presently, a few artists and craftspeople live and work there, but the complex also houses galleries and a function centre.

Architecturally, Montsalvat has much in common with a simple French village in Provence revealing a mix of rustic architectural styles. There is very much a European village feel to the place! The picturesque buildings are surrounded by lawns and gardens.

The Great Hall of Montsalvat is like a European Manor House. Today it is used for exhibitions, receptions and concerts. Much of the art of Jorgensen is exhibited here, as well as the art of his contemporaries.

EIRENIC - adjective[formal] "Aiming or aimed at peace."

A serene sunset, away from the hustle and bustle of the City, but in direct view of it, at the Eltham War Memorial Park in Kangaroo Ground.

As the clouds of impending war seem to dull the horizons of our near future, it is worthwhile to reflect on all of the bloody conflicts of the past and do everything in our power in the present to prevent such horrors from recurring...

Montsalvat is an artist colony in Eltham, Victoria, Australia, established by Justus Jorgensen in 1934. It is home to over a dozen buildings, houses and halls set amongst richly established gardens on 48,562 m2 (12 acres) of land. The colony of Montsalvat has a detailed history that reflects the life of Jörgensen and his friends and family; there is also a legend behind its name, while its buildings and gardens are steeped in the art and culture of Melbourne and its surroundings.

Visitors can pay a small fee to walk throughout the colony's historical gardens, artists' houses/workshops and explore the surrounding buildings. All of the buildings on the site were designed and built by residents with locally available materials, from various sources. The Great Hall offers an extensive network of spaces from extravagant halls and vast exhibition spaces, to small corridors and tiny balconies overlooking the gardens.

Currently Montsalvat's grounds and buildings are mostly used for exhibitions, performances, conferences, seminars, weddings and receptions; however, many artists (such as luthiers, jewellers, painters,glass artists, ceramicists, textile artists, sculptors and a writer) continue to reside in Montsalvat. Several classes on various disciplines of art are offered year round by the resident artists.
