AT THE UNIVERSITY

The University of Melbourne (colloquially known as Melbourne University) is a public research university located in Melbourne, Australia. Founded in 1853, it is Australia's second oldest university and the oldest in Victoria. Its main campus is located in Parkville, an inner suburb north of Melbourne's central business district, with several other campuses located across Victoria.

The university comprises ten separate academic units and is associated with numerous institutes and research centres, including the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research and the Grattan Institute. The university has fifteen graduate schools, including the Melbourne Business School, the Melbourne Law School, the Melbourne Veterinary School, and the Melbourne Medical School.

In the QS World University Rankings 2025, the University of Melbourne was ranked 13th (1st nationally). Times Higher Education ranked Melbourne 33rd globally (1st in Australia) in the 2021–2022 iteration of its annual World University Rankings. In 2022, it ranked 33rd among the universities around the world by SCImago Institutions Rankings. I am proud to call this University my Alma Mater (all photos are from the Parkville Campus).

CAMBERWELL ART SHOW 2024

We visited the Camberwell Art Show last Saturday at the Swinburne University of Technology's Hawthorn Campus. It was a very well-organised, extensive showing of works by well-known, emerging and amateur artists. As always well-curated and displayed in a commodious and interesting setting. A most enjoyable outing once again this year!

Amongst Melbourne's 15 graduate schools the Melbourne Business School, the Melbourne Law School and the Melbourne Medical School are particularly well regarded. Times Higher Education ranked Melbourne 32nd globally in 2017-2018, while the Academic Ranking of World Universities places Melbourne 39th in the world (first in Australia), and in the QS World University Rankings 2018 Melbourne ranks 41st globally. Four Australian prime ministers and five governors-general have graduated from the University of Melbourne. Nine Nobel laureates have been students or faculty, the most of any Australian university.

RMIT CHANGES

RMIT University (officially the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and often simply referred to as RMIT) is an Australian university of technology and design based in Melbourne, Victoria. RMIT was founded in 1887 by grazier, politician and public benefactor the Hon. Francis Ormond—as the Working Men's College of Melbourne. Its foundation campus is located in Melbourne City, and is a contiguous part of the northern area of the city centre. It opened as a night school for instruction in art, science and technology—to support the industrialisation of Melbourne during the 19th century. It had an initial enrolment of 320 students. As of 2013, it has an enrolment of around 82,000 students across vocational, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

RMIT REFLECTIONS

This is a view down LaTrobe St, towards the West. The old RMIT University building with its distinctive Victorian tower can be seen. RMIT University (officially the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and simply referred to as RMIT) is an Australian university of technology and design based in Melbourne, Victoria.

RMIT was founded in 1887 by grazier, politician and public benefactor the Hon. Francis Ormond, as the Working Men's College of Melbourne. It is the third oldest tertiary education provider in Victoria, and is the eighth oldest provider of tertiary education in Australia. Its foundation campus is located in Melbourne City, and is a contiguous part of the northern area of the city centre.

The reflection is in a watering trough used by horses - once common in the City, but now the only horses are the Mounted Police one occasionally sees.

SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY

Swinburne University of Technology is an Australian public university based in Melbourne, Victoria. The institution was founded by the Honourable George Swinburne in 1908. It achieved university status in June 1992. In 2011 there were 18,134 students enrolled in Higher education and an estimated 13,786 students enrolled in TAFE. Swinburne has five campuses in Melbourne at Hawthorn, Prahran, Lilydale, Wantirna, Croydon – and one in Sarawak, Malaysia.

MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY - MEDICAL HISTORY MUSEUM 2

When visiting the University of Melbourne Medical Museum recently I was intrigued to see exhibited there a brass plaque commemorating the death in 1910 of a University of Melbourne Medical School student.  He was Canute Henry Clowes (died 1910). The arrow points him out in this detail from a photograph of fifth year medical students in 1910, also on exhibition in the museum.

No degree exists to acknowledge Canute Henry Clowes’ Medical Course. He died soon after the final exams in 1910. There are records of his death at his home in Tylden, Victoria, on the 27th of December 1910, contrary to what the plaque states. He had one more exam to sit that was to be held in March 1911. The Argus newspaper of Melbourne on Wednesday 4 March 1908, carried the notice that Canute Henry Clowes passed a supplementary examination in Anatomy. Remarkably little else can be found about Canute Henry Clowes' life or cause of death on the web...

He is buried in Tylden Cemetery (the photo is from the webpage of the cemetery that you can find here and it lists him as interred in the one of the graves there). The photo of the cemetery is from the website. Tylden is a small country town in central Victoria, Australia in the Shire of Macedon Ranges Local Government Area, 83 kilometres north-west of Melbourne. At the 2006 census, Tylden has a population of 350. Tylden Post Office opened on 7 January 1860.
