YARRA RIVER, CITY

The Yarra River is a Melbourne icon as it wends its way through the countryside, suburbs and finally through the centre of the city to empty into Port Phillip Bay. These views of the River and City Skyline are from the Southern bank, looking across towards Birrarung Marr Park (see here for more of my photos of this park).

The public art seen is Deborah Halpern’s impressive, large, tiled sculpture titled "Angel".

This post is part of the Water World Wednesday meme,
and also part of the Nature Footsteps Waters meme,
and also part of the Outdoor Wednesday meme.

From 1988 until 2005, Deborah Halpern’s ceramic sculpture was sited in the southern moat of the National Gallery of Victoria on St Kilda Road. With its joyful spirit and arresting form, the 10-metre-high sculpture attracted the attention of passers-by and soon became one of the city’s best known and loved public artworks. In its new location, it can be admired "in the round" from multiple vantage points

  4. I think I used to like the sculpture best when it was in the water outside the gallery - I think it had a better sense of scale there. But what do I know!
