UNION LANE GRAFFITI

Union Lane is an alley running between the Bourke St Mall and Little Collins St in the CBD. It represents an area of 560 square metres of wall that were painted in 2010 by about 70 artists from Melbourne, Perth, Glasgow, Auckland and even San Salvador. Melbourne City Council commissioned this new artwork in 2010. The artists repainted the entire lane in over 5 months. Unfortunately much of the artwork has now become trashed by silly tags and inane defacement. Painting in Union Lane is illegal unless authorised by permit at the Council. The defacing tags and scrawls are obviously not authorised and have destroyed some really nice art.

This post is part of the Mural Monday meme.

  1. That is some great art work and it is sad to see things like that defaced and it happens all too frequently -- everywhere! Marvelous captures, Nick! Have a great week!

  4. Who would have thought a couple of decades ago that Melbourne would become known for the grafitti in some of its lanes. The world turns in the stangest ways,
