MURAL IN SOUTH MELBOURNE

I was rushing to an appointment a few days ago and out of the corner of my eye I caught sight of a rather large mural adorning the wall of a little lane that led to the parking lot behind the large office on Market St, close to Clarendon St. The brilliant blues was what caught my eye first.

At the risk of being late for my appointment, I did take some photos. Just as well as I did as I had to rush off again afterwards. It was raining too, by that time.

The mural is a tribute to Salvador Dalí, with several signature thematic devices: Melting clock, hatching egg, distorted skulls, etc. There is however, a fixation on chairs and armchairs that run through the imagery. I was wondering whether the mural was connected with a furniture shop nearby?

This post is part of the Monday Murals meme,
and also part of the Blue Monday meme.

  1. Hi Nick,

Of course the blue caught you eye! How fortunate we are that you took the time for these interesting shots. Someone sure used his imagination to paint this tribute to Dali. Funny that he did not put a label on it. Thanks for playing today.

    Happy Blue Monday!

  2. The Dali salute is very well done. And the wide open spaces lend themselves well to Dali-esque themes.

But the passerby never knows if the mural artist obtained the permission of the business owner to cover his walls in paint, or not.

  3. I'm not really a fan of Dali, but these murals are nice!

  4. I see what you mean about the chairs. Subliminal advertising or not, the homage to Dali is fun and eye catching. Thanks, Nick, for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.

  5. I love art so this was exciting to see! Salvador Dali was a really incredibly talented artist with no rules! I love to figure out what he was saying in many of his pieces. This is beautiful in blue. Thanks for sharing.
