HOLY TRINITY, KEW

The Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Kew, is one of the parishes of the Diocese of Melbourne in the Anglican Church of Australia.  Services of worship began in this building in March, 1863. The Vicarage was built in 1873, and both carry National Heritage classifications. The church contains many splendid stained glass windows dating from the 19th century.

I took this photo a few days ago and the oak trees in front of the church show their bare winter branches and seemed to ask for a sepia monochrome treatment. So be it.

SPRING IN AUTUMN

Walking along a church garden in Kew, my eye caught sight of this Pyrus calleryana. It is also known as the Callery pear or Bradford pear, and is a species of pear tree native to China and Vietnam, in the family Rosaceae.

Now we are nearly at the end of Autumn here in Australia, and you can see the fallen yellow brown leaves on the ground. However, this tree was blooming as if it were Spring, some of the flowers opening next to the ripening fruit on the same tree... How odd!

HOLY TRINITY CHURCH, KEW

The beautiful old Anglican Church of the Holy Trinity, on the corner of High St and Pakington St, Kew, is an imposing Victorian building. Begun in 1862 to the design of Charles Barrett, it has been heterogeneously extended over time, and is now of greater interest for elements like the Albert Memorial window of 1864, and for the fine reredos, carved by William Howitt to the design of Laver & Fick.

Holy Trinity has provided the spiritual home to a community of faith that has gathered to worship in a magnificent bluestone building since 1863. The church has been the focus of the Anglican Kew community in many ways over the years, and provides a traditional style of worship, and a contemporary family ministry with services and playgroup.

AT THE BOATHOUSE

The Studley Park Boathouse, originally established as the Burn's Boathouse, has been in continuous use since 1863. It is located in Yarra Bend Park, about 10 minutes drive from the  Melbourne City centre. This park is the largest area of natural bushland within the Melbourne Metropolitan area. The park's popularity waned mid-century as motor cars expanded leisure choices. Since the early 1980s revegetation and the construction of the Main Yarra Trail have led to a resurgence of popularity.

FLOWERING MALUS

Malus ioensis ‘Plena’ or double, pink flowering crab apple is possibly the best ornamental flowering tree there is. It is a beautiful little deciduous tree that only grows to approximately 5 mts tall, and 3 - 4 mts wide with lovely green foliage appearing at the start of Spring. Once a layer of foliage is produced, clusters of bright pink buds form all over the tree and burst open in mid-Spring. The flowers open to blush pink and then fade to white. The blossom is beautifully perfumed.

In Autumn the foliage turns to a mixture of orange and red then falls to let the Winter sun in. The tree is an attractive shape and looks good even bare, in Winter. Malus like full sun and well drained soil and prefer mulch to keep the moisture in for Summer. It is a self-forming tree so only prune if branches are in your way. Feed with All-Purpose Fertiliser when first foliage begins to appear.

EMDEN GOOSE

Domestic geese (Anser anser domesticus or Anser cygnoides domesticus) are domesticated grey geese (either greylag geese or swan geese) that are kept by humans as poultry for their meat, eggs, and down feathers since ancient times.

Here is an Emden goose, which is a breed of domestic goose. The origins of this breed are thought to be from the North Sea region, in the Netherlands and Germany. The eminent author Lewis Wright wrote around 1900 that he was of the opinion that they originated from the town of Emden in Lower Saxony, Germany. This one lives near the Kew Boathouse on the Yarra River.

KEW CENTRAL

Kew is a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, 6 km east from Melbourne's Central Business District. Its local government area is the City of Boroondara. At the 2011 Census, Kew had a population of 23,876. Formerly a city in its own right, the cities of Kew, Hawthorn and Camberwell were amalgamated in 1994 to form the City of Boroondara. The suburb borders the Yarra River to the west and north, with Hawthorn to its south and Balwyn to its east.

The commercial precinct known as Kew Junction began to take shape in the 1850s. The first store was opened by Mr. J. J. French in August 1853 and the first post office on 6 October 1856, however, it was not till towards the end of the decade that many shops appeared in High Street. The Kew Hotel opened in 1855, the Prospect Hill Hotel (now the Dan Murphy's liquor store) in 1857, the Council Hotel about 1860, the Clifton (now Hotel Kew) in 1869 and the Greyhound (now the Skinny Dog Hotel) in 1874. The block of civic buildings comprising the former post office, the former court house and the former police station were built in 1888 as was the National Bank, at the corner of Walpole and High Streets.

HOUSES IN KEW

Formerly a city in its own right, the cities of Kew, Hawthorn and Camberwell were amalgamated in 1994 to form the City of Boroondara. The suburb borders the Yarra River to the west and north, with Hawthorn to its south and Balwyn to its east.

It is a fairly affluent suburb with most homes being free-standing and surrounded by gardens and tree-lined streets. Most of the properties are of mid-20th century vintage, although there are increasing numbers of new houses being built and (unfortunately) a considerable number of multi-unit and multi-story apartment developments.

KANE'S BRIDGE, KEW

Studley Park is part of the 642-acre Yarra Bend Park and the Yarra River runs across the park. It is located 4 km north-east of the Melbourne CBD in the suburb of Kew.

Kane's Bridge was built in 1929 to link Studley Park and Yarra Bend Park. It was washed away by the floods in 1934 and rebuilt in 1935. The bridge was named after Councillor T J Kane of Collingwood, who was a member of the Yarra Bend Management Committee. It is a suspension bridge and looks quite solid and substantial. However, like all suspension bridges it does vibrate and sway. While we were crossing it, a group of 5-6 joggers ran past and we could feel the bridge move quite substantially in response to the rhythm of their footfall.
