MURALS IN MELBOURNE CENTRAL

I have blogged about Melbourne Central before. This is a big shopping mall in Central Melbourne City. True to Melbourne tradition, there has been some attempt to create modern "alleys" and "walkways" in the centre, as well as arcade-like shopping areas. Menzies Place is one of these "alleys" in a modern guise and when one rides the escalators up to the Food Hall, one can see these contemporary monochrome decorative murals. While quite modern, they evoke a sense of nostalgia and there are references to the past also. The butterflies and ant theme is also used in the murals of the Food Hall, about which I'll do another post, next week. Sorry about the poor quality of some of the photos, but it's hard to take good shots while riding an escalator which is not too well lit...

This post is part of the Monday Murals meme.

  1. Hi there - that seems like a good way to blend the old with the new.

  2. What a wonderful thing to have this view rather than the plain walls! Makes for interesting riding!

  4. I totally agree with EG -- I don't care for malls, but I would really enjoy visiting this one! Nothing wrong with your captures, Nick, I really enjoyed them all -- escalator taken or not! Hope you had a good weekend and that your week is off to a great start!

  5. This looks like a lot of planning has gone into making this a unique experience instead of a cookie cutter mall. (And if I tried to take a picture while on the escalator, I'm sure I'd trip and roll all the way down, even if I was going up!).

  6. I don't like shopping malls, we have too many and I seldom go to such places, but you knew how to shoot inside one. These are fantastic!

  7. Very nice artistry on the walls... they definitely is a "come on" to shoppers and would be.

  12. The mural is lot nicer to look at on an escalator than the usual series of advertisements I see here. :-)
