MALING RD MURALS

Maling Road, Canterbury, is only a 20 minute drive from Melbourne’s CBD but walking down the street takes you back a century in time and beyond. Maling Road has successfully preserved its old time feel and architecture from its humble beginnings in the late 1800s.

The five murals (at Maling Lane next to the Village on the railway wall) depict the significant stages in the history of the Maling Road Precinct - from 1885 (when the railway first was developed) to the present day. The murals themselves depict the overall historic story which includes a nursery rhyme hunt for children in an edgy, popular.folk art style, which engages children and adults alike.

Here's one of the murals illustrating the glamorous '40s as typified by the cinema. More murals from this neighbourhood int eh coming weeks.

This post is part of the Monday Murals meme,
and also part of the Monday Mellow Yellows meme,
and also part of the Mandarin Orange Monday meme,
and also part of the Blue Monday meme.

  2. I read the plaque and it seems that the fate of movie theatres in your country and my country have a very similar history from their hay days to their downfall. The mural artist has left us a glimpse of the theater's hay days.

  11. Love how the visuals of the murals tell a story. And the colours are stunning. The street view in the first photo is interesting too. So many cars and so few people.

  13. You do find some terrific murals Nick. Have been absent for a while. Been travelling overseas with my Nikon in hand. I'm quite excited to be making a temporary departure from my daily Melbourne photo replacing it with an image a day from our journey. Renewed my enthusiasm for photography. Ciao J.

  14. I like the way you took us down the street and then showed us the mural in an alley. I'm feeling the 1930s-40s vibe of the scene. Love the coat the woman is wearing. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.

  15. Ahh...Melbourne...Maling Road...(sigh)
I left Melbourne last July so it was lovely to nip back through your post. I've often wandered up and down Maling Road stopping for coffee or lunch obviously. It's complusary isn't it?
The mural is fantastic. I wonder who the lady in the blue coat was and why is she waving so enthusiastically? Do you think she's meeting a long lost friend or did someone pinch her handbag? ;D
Have a great week and thanks for taking me back to revisit..it was such a pleasure and I hope I can see more soon :)
