SEAFARERS BRIDGE

The Seafarers Bridge is a footbridge over the Yarra River between Docklands and South Wharf in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The bridge connects the north and south banks of the river while providing a formal entrance to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The bridge main span is supported by steel ties connected to elliptical arches, with three arches on the north side and four arches on the south side. The bridge was named in homage to the ‘Mission to Seafarers’ centre located nearby on the northern bank of the Yarra River and to represent Melbourne’s rich maritime history.

MELBOURNE EVENING

Melbourne Docklands is a waterfront development in the heart of Melbourne, located on the spectacular Victoria Harbour with three kilometres of Yarra River frontage. With extensive waterfront promenades, urban art, interesting architecture, historic and contemporary buildings, state-of-the-art marinas, stylish waterfront restaurants, cosy bars and active waterways, Docklands has plenty to offer.

The views on the water include, as well as the numerous leisure craft, the Bolte Bridge, which is a large twin cantilever bridge. It spans the Yarra River and Victoria Harbour in the Docklands precinct to the west of the Melbourne CBD. It forms part of the CityLink system of toll roads that connects the Tullamarine Freeway from the northern suburbs with the West Gate Freeway and the Domain and Burnley tunnels to the Monash Freeway and the south eastern suburbs.

WEBB BRIDGE

Webb Bridge (or Web Bridge) is a walkway/cycleway across the Yarra River from the southside housing developments to the northside entertainment, shopping and dining venues at the Melbourne Docklands. It's an interesting, unique-looking bridge which is part of a Melbourne public art project.

Webb Bridge was designed to represent a Koori (Australian aboriginal) eel trap. The bridge reused the remaining sections of the disused Webb Rail Bridge. But because the framework of the bridge does look like a mesh or web, the name Web Bridge may become the more common appellation.

Crossing Webb Bridge from the Yarra River southside area known as Yarra's Edge brings you to Docklands Park on the north side and thence to Victoria Harbour Promenade, Harbour Esplanade with Docklands Stadium on the right, and on to NewQuay and Waterfront City on the north side of Victoria Harbour.

JIM STYNES BRIDGE

Melbourne’s newest walking and cycling bridge along the Yarra River, named the "Jim Stynes Bridge" in honour of the late footballer, opened in June 2014. Planning Minister Matthew Guy and Lord Mayor Robert Doyle joined Stynes’ wife Samantha and children Matisse and Tiernan to mark the bridge's first day of operation. The bridge was formally opened by Tiernan, who ran through a banner built by the Melbourne cheer squad that read ‘‘Jim’s Bridge’’.

The Jim Stynes Bridge reminds people of the contribution the 2010 Melburnian of the Year had made to Melbourne. Jim Stynes represented the quintessential Melbourne story: A migrant made good. The story of his settling in Melbourne, his outstanding AFL career, his philanthropy and charity work, and his brave fight against cancer touched us all. Designed by engineers Aurecon in partnership with Cox Architecture, a bronze plaque at each end of the bridge tells the life story of Stynes, who died in 2012.

ROWING ON THE YARRA RIVER

Rowing on the Yarra River has been a popular activity since the beginnings of Melbourne as a City in the mid-19th century. Melbourne's historic rowing boathouses on the banks of the Yarra River in Alexandra Gardens are home to the following Melbourne rowing clubs:
Banks Rowing Club [1865]
Mercantile Rowing Club [1880]
La Trobe University Rowing Club [1969]
Melbourne Rowing Club [1862]
Melbourne University Boat Club [1859]
Yarra Yarra Rowing Club [1871]
Richmond Rowing Club [1863].

In 1904 the first Henley-on-Yarra regatta was held, becoming one of the most popular events in Melbourne and drawing huge crowds to both banks of the river. It is not surprising that at almost any time, right through the year one may see rowers practising their sport, as one can see in the Docklands stretch of the river here.

BOLTE BRIDGE, MORNING

The Bolte Bridge is a large twin Cantilever bridge in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

The bridge was designed by architects Denton Corker Marshall and was built for head contractor Transurban by Baulderstone Hornibrook, construction taking three years from 1996 to 1999 and costing $75 million. It was named by Jeff Kennett, for former Premier of Victoria, Sir Henry Bolte because of its linking the West Gate, Monash and Tullamarine Freeways - projects commissioned or completed by the Bolte Government.

It is one of the largest balanced cantilever box girder bridges, that were cast in situ, in Australia. The superstructure is built as two independent bridges of variable depth, pre-stressed concrete box girders, separated by a 1.15 m clear gap between the structures.

The bridge features two 90 metre high silver towers, situated on either side of the roadway at the midpoint of the bridge's span. These two towers are an aesthetic addition by the architects, and are not joined to the main body of the bridge. The towers are hollow, and feature access ladders to a small roof top hatch. The bridge has four spans with two main spans of 173 metres and side spans of 72 metres, giving an overall bridge length of 490 metres. The bridge supports six lanes of automobile traffic. Access is prohibited to cyclists and pedestrians.

WHITE CAPS, DOCKLANDS

"Whitecaps" (2012) by Ari Purhonen is an art work in the Water Plaza (asterisk in map below marks the spot). The open sky, wind and the ebb and flow of the tides are elements in Docklands that connect us to the vastness of nature. Nesting on the timber piles that once supported the old wharves, the mesmerising artwork shimmers like a shoal of fish gently moving with the winds and tides of the harbour.
