AT THE NURSERY

We visited Poynton's Nursery in Essendon this morning and it was absolutely marvellous. Huge range of plants, garden statues, fountains and water features, a café, and helpful, friendly staff. Not to forget two shops onsite with homewares and decorative items. Will go back there soon!

BAAG FLOWER MURAL

Bulleen Art and Garden (BAAG) is a gallery and plant nursery on Manningham Road in Bulleen. It is easy to spot with its bright red, purple and yellow coloured wall jumping out at you as you drive past. Artwork and fun signs invite you in.

There is a garden specialty store stocking so much more than just a simple mix of products for the backyard. They've got hand-woven baskets, food preserving equipment, cookbooks and kitchen items. There are imported garden lanterns, unusual dining ware and sculptures to complement outdoor dining. There are shoes, gloves and other gardening apparel as well. And all of the nursery supplies and plants you would expect to find as well. A gallery offers quirky artworks for sale and there are always experienced nursery people to talk to regarding gardening queries.

This mural is found in the water garden area and has been painted by Paul Kalemba in 2009. It is unusual as it is painted on copper panel. The waterlily/frog theme suits the water garden section very well!

GARDENWORLD

Gardenworld at 810 Springvale Rd, Braeside, 3195 is a large gardening business with a huge range of plants including seedlings and tubes.  There is also a great variety of food crops including fruit trees, berries and grapevines. Indoor plants, decorator items, gardening needs, and all things horticultural are also stocked.

The concept was founded over 30 years ago by the Jackson family, who moved their family nursery from nearby Dingley. Their idea was to run the nursery for themselves, but let other experts in their field run the other specialist businesses. Gardenworld thus became a group of 7 independently owned businesses, each one passionate about gardening and outdoor living:
1) Collectors Corner - Amazing bonsai, cacti, orchids, gems and fossils
2) Gardenworld Nursery - Quality plants, fertilisers and potting mixes
3) Lotus Watergardens - Fountains, water gardens and statues
4) Gardensmart - Hydroponic gardening and hanging basket experts
5) Semken Landscaping - Garden design, construction and maintainance
6) Gardenworld Café - Delicious meals and great coffees
7) Smart Water Shop - Lawn and irrigation specialists.

Gardenworld is open 9am until 5pm, 7 days a week. It is closed on Christmas day and New Years Day. Some businesses may be closed on other public holidays so it's always worthwhile ringing to find out what is closed when. We always enjoy visiting this nursery and it's impossible to go there and not end up buying something (or some things!).

BULLEEN MURAL

Bulleen Art & Garden at 6 Manningham Rd West is a nursery and gallery, which focusses on the environment and creativity. There is a great range of herbs, fruit and vegies and the nursery specialises in edible, indigenous and low water use plants.

Food and habitat gardening is a positive contribution that everyone can make to the environment and their own community and nursery staff have experience and expertise in gardening, the environment and the arts with strong connections to the local community.

The façade of the nursery is very distinctive with its ceramic mural by Meredith Plain, and it gives an indication of the wide range of art that can be found in the gallery within the nursery.

AT THE NURSERY

Last week we visited the Banksia Nursery in Wantirna, an outer suburb of Melbourne. It is located at 530 Burwood Highway, Wantirna South and it is quite a large complex, with nursery, garden supplies, greenhouses, ponds and water plants and also a café on the grounds. We always enjoy visiting there and always come away with a new plant or two.

The murals seem to be de rigueur in nurseries and this one was no exception, with the two illustrated here. The bucolic as well as the humorous...

The blue display is for a good cause, "Beyond Blue", which is an organisation working to reduce the impact of anxiety, depression and suicide in the community by raising awareness and understanding, empowering people to seek help, and supporting recovery, management and resilience.

The orange and yellow display is for the imminent approach of Autumn to the Southern Hemisphere, and there were certainly more than one indication of this in the garden these past couple of weeks.

AT RIVERS NURSERY

Rivers Nursery is located at 28 Kurrak Rd, Yarrambat, Victoria. Yarrambat is on the north eastern outskirts of metropolitan Melbourne, near Greensborough, Eltham and South Morang. We always enjoy our visit there because as well as a wide variety of plants, gift shop, friendly and knowledgeable staff, a good restaurant for refreshments, there is always the opportunity to admire the pond and feed the ducks!
