Once a large independent city, Oakleigh was absorbed into Melbourne as part of the eastward expansion of the metropolis in the 1950s. As a result, it once had its own large historic Central Business District, its own municipality in the former City of Oakleigh and its own suburbs.
The area is traditionally known to have a strong Greek cultural influence, largely due to the influx of said immigrants to Australia in the mid-20th century. Fourteen per cent of those living in the suburb speak only Greek at home. It's always great to visit one of the cafés there, sit outside and order a cup of coffee and a pastry or cake...

Lovely photos, thanks for sharing, have a nice Monday
ReplyDeleteMuch love...
An amazing amount of orange in these streetscape views. Love how the umbrella brigade extends right out into the mall area.
ReplyDeleteThe Oakleigh Mall is a reall success story Nick. Once a normal road it was transformed into a pedestrian mall after considerable adjustment to surrounding streets. One by one the cafes appeared and the people continue to fill the seats. Had a great Souvlaki at the Orexi Souvlaki Bar in this mall a couple of weeks ago.
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how much orange you have found around you ...colour journeys as we used to call them at school. I also like the colour and shiny texture of the leaves in your MoM image. Thanks Nick, for being part of Mandarin Orange Monday 100. Next week I will take up your suggestion of choosing my favourites ( of my work). I ran out of time this week!
ReplyDeleteLove those orange chairs...♪ http://lauriekazmierczak.com/zzzzh-impression/
