VEGIE SHOPPING

We are very lucky in Melbourne in terms of the variety of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables that are available in greengrocers' shops day in day out, no matter what the season. Summer, however, is particularly plentiful and in this greengrocery ("Just Ripe" in Northland), where we often shop the variety is wonderful.

YARRA RIVER, CITY

Early in the morning, on a walk along the Yarra River in the City. Princes Bridge and the rowers going under it, flocks of gulls flying overhead and a goose fossicking for tasty tidbits, while the morning sky is reflected in the quiet waters.

SUNRISE IN THE CITY

We have been experiencing some unsettled weather lately, with unseasonal warmth and fine days, alternating with cold, wet weather. Every now and then high winds punctuate the weather pattern so that we don;t get too sure of ourselves. As a consequence, the skies int eh morning and evening have been quite spectacular. Here is a magnificent sunrise over the Yarra River in the City.

TOUR DE CRAWF

Shane Crawford, legendary Brownlow medallist, BCNA Ambassador and The AFL Footy Show personality, has left Melbourne to complete his biggest challenge yet when he rides his bike across Australia to raise funds and awareness for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). The 3,600 kilometre "Tour de Crawf "– Ride to the other side is a gruelling 22-day marathon in which Shane will average 170 kilometres a day and will see him pass through towns such as Bendigo, Swan Hill, Mildura, Berri, Port Augusta, Kimba, Penong, Eucla, Madura, Norseman, Kalgoorlie, Yellowdine and Kellerberrin.

Last Thursday morning by the banks of the Yarra, a function was held to publicise this fund raising event and to also gather donations for the great work that the Breast Cancer Network Australia is doing. You too can donate to this worthy cause here.

SUNRISE IN THE PARKLANDS

Darebin Parklands, in Fairfield/Alphington/Ivanhoe, is a pocket of natural bushland that is unique given it is only 7 km from the Melbourne CBD. There are hidden treasures within the park including remnant orchards and crops that were grown on the fringe of a growing city during the mid-1800s. A dairy farm, vineyard, quarry and tip site were all at times active industries within the bounds of the park, and clues of this can still be found if one knows where to look. Sunrise there is quite magical.

SOUTHBANK'S OPHELIA

Southgate’s resident art sculpture “Ophelia” by artist Deborah Halpern has been re-located to the river promenade. For nearly 20 years “Ophelia”, had watched over the entrance to Southgate from her courtyard position at BearBrass. As part of Southgate’s redevelopment, “Ophelia” was temporarily taken back to the artist’s studio for restoration before being permanently relocated to a prominent riverside location, right out the front of Southgate’s main entrance.

Once known as the face of Melbourne, “Ophelia” was inspired by the character from Hamlet, full of both love and sadness. Halpern says “Ophelia” is the cousin of “Angel”, the sculpture that adorned the moat of the National Gallery of Victoria for nearly 20 years and now lives upstream at Birrarung Marr. Together they bring life and humanity to the river.

RUBIK'S CUBE OF MELBOURNE MUSEUM

Melbourne Museum is in the Carlton Gardens in Melbourne, Australia, adjacent to the Royal Exhibition Building. It was designed by Denton Corker Marshall Architects and finished construction in 2001. The museum is a rich response to Melbourne’s urban condition, and provides a place for education, history, culture and society to engage with each other in a contemporary setting. It is now an important part of Melbourne’s soft infrastructure.

It is the largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere, and is a venue of Museum Victoria, which also operates the Immigration Museum and Scienceworks Museum.The museum has seven main galleries, a Children's Gallery and a temporary exhibit gallery on three levels, Upper, Ground and Lower Level and was constructed by Baulderstone Hornibrook

The entire Children's Gallery (housed in what looks like a giant Rubik's Cube) is aimed at 3-8 year olds, (although it is proving to be popular with all ages), and consists of three spaces; the exhibition gallery Big Box, The Learning Environment and the Tattersall's Children's Garden.
