MELBOURNE WATER VIEWS

Melbourne is built around Port Phillip Bay, which is a large bay in southern Victoria. Geographically, the bay covers 1,930 square kilometres and the shore stretches roughly 264 km. Although it is extremely shallow for its size, most of the bay is navigable. The deepest portion is only 24 metres, and half the region is shallower than 8 m. The volume of the water in the bay is around 25 cubic kilometres. The Bay provides opportunity for shipping and boating as well as numerous water-based leisure activities.

In addition to the Bay, to the south and close to Melbourne CBD there is the Albert Park Lake around which there is an extensive park. The park encompasses 2.25 square kilometres of parkland including Albert Park Lake (0.49 square kilometres) and provides numerous ovals, sporting facilities, the Albert Park Public Golf Course, a 5 km walking track around the lake, and the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit.

I have blogged before about the Yarra River that course through Melbourne, but there are also smaller creeks and lakes throughout the metropolitan area.

and also part of the Nature Footsteps Waters meme.

  1. Such a lovely city, Nick, and I always enjoy the tours you take us on! I've been able to travel a lot over my many years, but always regretted that I was never able to get to Australia! Your tours and photos are the next best thing!! Hope your week is going well!

  10. Beautiful....that image of the bay with the clock tower from the city hall is great. The focal point being the tower of course, but still it give a great perspective of the cityscape and surrounding water.
