Carlton is an inner city suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 2 km north from Melbourne's central business district. Its Local Government Area is the City of Melbourne. At the 2006 Census, Carlton had a population of 12,050. Its boundaries are roughly Elizabeth Street to the West, Princes Street to the North, Victoria Parade to the south, and Nicholson Street to the East.
The suburb is well known for its "Little Italy" precinct on Lygon Street, for its Victorian architecture and its European-style squares (University Square, Lincoln Square, Argyle Place and MacArthur Place) and the Carlton Gardens, the latter being the location of the Royal Exhibition Building, one of Australia's few man-made sites with World Heritage status. Carlton is thought to have been named after Carlton House, London.
Autumn is well on its way out, leaving the stage ready for winter and Carlton's many exotic European trees are shedding their leaves.

It looks a great place to live or visit. Lygon St is legendary!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a piece of Europe.
ReplyDeleteHi there - I think its remarkable that Carlton has the best Victorian (time, not state!) street scapes anywhere in the world! Large amounts of similar architecture got blown up in the UK during WW2. What was left was often knocked down in 1960s redevelopment.
