SEA VIEW

Looking out towards Port Phillip Bay from Southbank. The building of more and more high rise apartment buildings is increasing density, crime, noise, pollution, demand on infrastructure and services. Loss of open space and sense of community, not to mention the views...

DISTANT SEA VIEW

Port Phillip Bay viewed from a Southbank apartment. The view is quickly disappearing as new high rise buildings are coming up like toadstools...

PORT PHILLIP BAY

Port Phillip Bay is a large, horsehead-shaped bay in southern Victoria, Australia, serving as the aquatic playground for Melbourne and Geelong. It is a popular destination for recreational activities and a home to diverse marine life and extensive coastlines.

This is the view from the top of a building in Southbank, and I am stretching the capabilities of my iPhone camera, zooming as much as I can to capture the sailing boats. The clock tower is that of the South Melbourne Town Hall.

PORT PHILLIP BAY

Port Phillip Bay and South Melbourne, viewed from the 25th floor of an apartment in Southbank. I'm stretching the zoom capability of my phone camera as you can see in the first photo. I've tried to clean up the photo with AI in the second image. Moral of the story, if you want best results use a dedicated camera with a decent zoom lens. It was a grey Winter's day, by the way...

Nevertheless, one can see that South Melbourne is a lovely old suburb with many trees and gardens as well as closeness to the sea. The Victorian Town Hall clock tower is evidence of many heritage buildings in this locale.

PORT MELBOURNE BEACH

Port Melbourne is a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, 5 km south-west from Melbourne's Central Business District with the beach stretching along the top eastern end of Port Phillip bay. The beach is close to the CBD district and has excellent public transport access. Dotted with palm trees and wide open sandy beaches, this area is a favourite place for families to spend time.

South Melbourne and Port Melbourne Life Saving Clubs patrol the beach between the Kerferd Road and Lagoon piers. At both clubs you will find toilets, dressing rooms and kiosks. Port Melbourne Beach is one of the closest patrolled beaches to Melbourne city with the Beach Lifesaving Club situated on the foreshore along Beaconsfield Parade. Along this stretch of foreshore there is a low seawall and promenade. When waves are low the beach is quite safe to swim at, however it is advisable to stay on the sand bar and in the patrolled area in front of each club.

You can also surf when the southerly winds are high enough. At the end of each of the Kerferd Road and Lagoon piers you can fish as the waters are quite deep. To the east of Lagoon Pier the beach is quite narrow since the vegetated dunes occupy a large area and are fenced off. All along this area the sand dunes are being re-vegetated with native plants and it is appreciated that you walk on the designated tracks so as not to disturb the plantings.

View to Port Phillip Bay towards the Southwest from Southbank. Most of the high rise buildings you can see are residential apartment blocks.

NAUTICAL

As the weather improves and we march towards Summer, the sailors and boatmen are getting ready their craft for fun in the sun on the Bay. The landlubbers can enjoy the view sitting inside the coolness of a seaside hotel sipping refreshing drinks...
