OPHELIA

The colorful "Ophelia" mosaic sculpture on the Southbank Promenade in Melbourne provides a lively encounter even on the greyest winter's day. The artist who created this is Deborah Halpern.

SEA VIEW

Looking out towards Port Phillip Bay from Southbank. The building of more and more high rise apartment buildings is increasing density, crime, noise, pollution, demand on infrastructure and services. Loss of open space and sense of community, not to mention the views...

QUEEN BEE

A colony of giant, golden bees designed by sculptor Richard Stringer and commissioned by the building's architect, Nonda Katsalidis. The main hive and large bees are found at the base (ground level) of the Eureka Tower in the Southbank precinct, with additional bees located at the nearby 2 Riverside Quay.

The bees are constructed from anodized aluminum and riveted together using 110,000 anodized rivets. Their gleaming golden colour is designed to match the building's iconic gold-plated glass apex. The installation serves as a gleaming metaphor for a harmonious, high-density city environment and a busy "hive" of frenetic activity inside the skyscraper.

SOUTHBANK

Southbank is a vibrant, high-density inner-city suburb of Melbourne located directly along the southern bank of the Yarra River. Known as the cultural and entertainment heart of the city, it sits just opposite the central business district (CBD). It seamlessly blends skyscrapers, thriving arts venues, and bustling waterfront dining precincts.

IT'S A JOB...

View from a balcony in Southbank. It's a painter painting the walls of a high rise apartment building. Can you find him in the first photo? I've given you a zoom photo in the second image. And as you can see in the third photo he gets a nice view of the sea (he has a little rear view mirror on his helmet!)...

DISTANT SEA VIEW

Port Phillip Bay viewed from a Southbank apartment. The view is quickly disappearing as new high rise buildings are coming up like toadstools...

SOUTHBANK

Southbank is a vibrant, high-density inner-city precinct in Melbourne known for its arts and cultural venues, a wide array of riverside dining and entertainment, and striking high-rise residential buildings. It is situated on the southern bank of the Yarra River, directly opposite the CBD.

Southbank has rapidly transformed from an industrial area into a dense, high-rise residential neighbourhood. It is a popular choice for young workers, with most dwellings being apartments. The area is very walkable, and public transport (trams and buses) is readily available, though there are no train stations within Southbank itself.

AT SOUTHBANK

Christmas tree at Southbank. The violet baubles are rather too lugubrious for my taste, despite the Barbie pink bows and bells...

SOUTHBANK

Southbank is is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1km south from Melbourne's Central Business District. It is nowadays dominated by high-rise development, although it was a former industrial area. It is one of the primary business centres in Greater Melbourne, being the headquarters of Foster's, Treasury Wine Estates, Crown Limited, Alumina, Incitec Pivot, The Herald and Weekly Times (including the Herald Sun), as well as regional offices of many major corporations, in a cluster of towers with over 340,000 square metres of office space in 2008.

Southbank is also one of the most densely populated areas of Melbourne, with a large cluster of apartment towers, including Australia's tallest tower measured to its highest floor, the Eureka Tower. Southbank Promenade and Southgate Arts and Leisure Precinct, on the southern bank of the Yarra River, extending to Crown Casino, is one of Melbourne's major entertainment precincts.

SOUTHBANK

Although Southbank is overdeveloped already, there are some small pockets of green in amongst the skyscrapers where one may sit and reflect on the benefits (or otherwise...) of living in a megalopolis.

CONSTRUCTION

Yet another apartment building going up in Southbank, just behind the beautiful, historic Boyd Centre. We are rapidly becoming an overdeveloped city with all the attendant misfortunes: Pollution, overcrowding, increased crime, poverty, poor infrastructure, decreased social and community support mechanisms, etc, etc. Melbourne once was said to be the "World's Most Livable City" - alas, nevermore.
