LOVE - DIVINE
Since 1886, St John’s Primary School has served the families and parish of Clifton Hill with a vision of school as a way of life. Today, St John’s is a vibrant mix of the old and the new, maintaining the Catholic tradition. The mural is located on the front of the School, facing Queen's Parade on Clifton Hill and has been created by Colleen Burke, who is a Melbourne-based artist and creator. Burke originally trained in Theatre and Theatre Design at Rusden, followed by studies in Fine Art and also Textile Design at RMIT.
Burke has been commissioned to produce events and designs and to curate exhibitions for Melbourne Fringe, The L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, Melbourne Museum, State of Design Festival and the Melbourne International Arts Festival. See: colleenburke.net.au The mural, which Burke created with the help of the schoolchildren celebrates the Christian values of Love, Hope, Faith and Charity and contains some charming images and beautifully vibrant colours.

FITZROY MURAL
This is a mural in Nicholson St, Carlton, by artist Justin Avery. Quite a striking piece with the tessellated blue and pink background on which are the three figures warping the fabric of time as it were, poking a stick through the orderly cubes. A nice touch is the galah in flight above!

MURAL IN 'THE MALL', HEIDELBERG WEST
The other day, we found a lovely mural in Heidelberg West in "The Mall". It is a design of polo players that is very much reminiscent of Persian miniatures found in manuscript books. The artist is Ronak Taher, an Iranian-Australian.
This is the artist's bio from her website:
"Ronak Taher is an Iranian-Australian artist born in 1984. She finished her bachelor of Graphic Design at the University of Tehran, also holds a Master of Illustration and Animation from the Azad University of Tehran.
In 2013 she was celebrated as one of the 300 upcoming world talents in film industry at the “Berlin Film Festival”. Her last animation was screened at the Montreal World Film Festival 2011, Chicago World Film Festival 2011, Shnit World Film Festival 2011 in Switzerland, South Africa, Germany, Austria, Costa Rica and Singapore, Florida International Film Festival 2012 to name a few.
Ronak also works in the fields of graphic design, illustration and sculpture. She has had over 6 solo and group visual art exhibitions and has illustrated more than 8 books for children and young adults. Her latest book “The Conference Of The Birds” will be published in France in 2014."

WESTGARTH MURAL
Yesterday, while driving to go to a fĂȘte, we came across this mural in Roberts St, Westgarth. It is in quite an obscure location, where not many people would find it. It is painted on a large roller door and the ribbed metal surface adds another dimension to the work.
The mural is by Sam King, an emerging British artist working within the mediums painting, murals, illustration and installation. His work fuses figuration with futurism and Eastern influence. Sam King's website can be found here.

ANOTHER MAKA MURAL
Mike Maka is a painter who works in a variety of media mainly on walls, canvas and illustration on paper. His web site is here and I have featured other Melbourne murals of his here, and here and here.
This latest mural featured in this post is found in Northcote, on the side wall of a two-story old Victorian terrace house. A rather incongruous image for such a grand old house, but perhaps this is part of the mural's appeal...
The mural depicts an R2-D2 type of robot, which seems to be a glorified music machine ("R2-DISCO"). The music theme is further hinted at by the electric leads and the tom-tom drums. On the other hand there is also suggestion of a space opera with a flying saucer hovering above and a crashed spaceship above the sumptuous red flower. The jungle-like setting with lush vegetation and floating blue fish completes the surreal image, a veritable "vernal equinox night's dream" quite aptly as we are approaching this astronomical occurrence...

GRAFFITI NEAR WESTGARTH STATION
While crossing the railway tracks on our way to the Merri Creek we discovered this wall covered in graffiti. While tagging and illegible scribbles usually turn me off, this selection had some redeeming features that amused me for 10 seconds or so... It was getting cold and rain was threatening to fall after all!

MOONEE PONDS MOSAIC
Mosaicist and visual artist Bev Plowman has created a mosaic at Moonee Ponds Central shopping centre in Hall Street. This art work was unveiled in August 2011, and features historical elements of Moonee Valley. It is a striking mural in a very prominent place within the shopping precinct and makes the rather plain and utilitarian building façade quite special.
The City of Moonee Valley is a local government area located within the metropolitan area of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It comprises the north-western suburbs between 3 and 13 kilometres from the Melbourne city centre, and at the 2011 Census, the City had a population of 107,443.

FITZROY MURALS
The streets of Melbourne are decorated with a number of murals, which come and go as they get vandalised, tagged, overpainted and scrubbed clean. Adnate in collaboration with Twoone created a huge mural in one of the alleyways at 120 Johnston St, at the back of Brunswick St in Fitzroy. The Australian-Japanese duo painted this mural in 2014, and it survives until now. The bottom has been overpainted slightly with another mural, but the result is not too jarring.

CAMBERWELL SUNDAY MARKET
Camberwell Sunday Market is a popular trash and treasure market held every Sunday by the Rotary Club of Balwyn, in the carpark at the rear of Burke and Riversdale roads, Camberwell. Only second hand goods, or hand-crafted goods, specifically made by the stallholder, excluding food are sold at the market so its great for vintage clothing, crockery and books as well as unusual things like photo albums, typewriters and ornaments.
You never know what you'll find there and with a bit of luck and digging you might uncover that hidden vintage gem. Some stall owners are happy to haggle so you might be able to save a few dollars. It's easy to spend the whole morning wandering through the markets in time for lunch at one of the many cafés and restaurants on Burke Road. The Camberwell Sunday Market raises funds for a wide range of charities raising over $9m for the community. Make sure you take along a hat or a parasol because in Summer the sun can be quite fierce and you may go searching for the shady café before not too long!
