ROAD TRIP

A road trip, sometimes spelled roadtrip, is a long-distance journey traveled by car. When I was younger, this was something I enjoyed and used to do a lot of, all around the world. Times were a little different then and one felt safer on the roads, being able to depend on the fellowship and help of other drivers on the road, especially in remote locations.

A little different nowadays, as many hidden dangers lurk on our highways and one has to be very careful on a road trip. Nevertheless, it still is a worthwhile adventure and with good planing it can turn out very well. Are you a fan of road trips?

SUMMER CITY

Sunny Summer day on Chapel St, South Yarra. Melbourne’s Chapel Street Precinct runs from the Yarra River to Dandenong Road, through the well-to-do metropolitan suburbs of South Yarra, Windsor & Prahran. A strong retail presence, including expensive boutiques and iconic major brand storefronts, vie with multiple eateries and cafés, restaurants and bars, as well quirky unique shops in the precincts of Yarra Lane, Commercial Road, Greville Street and High Street. The Prahran Market offers fresh food and produce as well as epicurean delis, butchers and fishmongers.

WARRANDYTE

Warrandyte is an outer suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 24 km north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District. Its local government area is the City of Manningham. At the 2011 Census, Warrandyte had a population of 5,520. Warrandyte is bounded in the west by the Mullum Mullum Creek and Target Road, in the north by the Yarra River, in the east by Jumping Creek and Anzac Road, and in the south by an irregular line from Reynolds Road, north of Donvale, Park Orchards and Warrandyte South.

Warrandyte was founded as a Victorian town, located in the once gold-rich rolling hills east of Melbourne, and is now on the north-eastern boundary of suburban Melbourne. Gold was first discovered in the town in 1851 and together, with towns like Bendigo and Ballarat, led the way in gold discoveries during the Victorian gold rush. Today Warrandyte retains much of its past in its surviving buildings of the Colonial period and remains a twin community with North Warrandyte, which borders the Yarra River to its north.

The Warrandyte Road Bridge over the Yarra River connects Warrandyte with North Warrandyte. The first bridge was built in 1861, but after its demise, the current bridge was built in 1952.

TRAM IN WINTER

It's Winter and the elms have lost almost all of their leaves on Royal Parade, one the world's last remaining avenues lined by century-old elms. Unfortunately many of these trees are nearing the end of their lives. An intensive replanting effort is needed to keep these magnificent trees growing on this road that leads to the City.

DETRAFFICKED

Weekday, time of the afternoon peak hour traffic. Huh? Where are all the cars? You say. Well, this is COVID lockdown normal for Melbourne. Today we had a release of a "Roadmap out of the COVID Lockdown". It was a bit of a joke, as painfully it has confirmed lockdown will stay and most industries will be shut or highly restricted until the end of October, in a bid to prevent our health system from being overrun by COVID-19...

SUMMER RAIN

We've had a bout of subtropical weather here in Melbourne in the last couple of days and it's been quite humid and wet. It has flummoxed quite a few drivers who seem to bee driving a little more erratically than usual - add to that the multitude of infrastructure and road projects all over the city, and it's not a pleasant drive on our roads anymore...

RUSH HOUR

"Hi Ho Hi Ho,
Its Off To Work We Go!"

Rush hour on the Eastern Freeway where hapless commuters battle the traffic every morning to get to work. And it will get much worse as our city grows and its growth is not only unchecked, but encouraged mindlessly...

ELWOOD

Elwood is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 8 km south of Melbourne's Central Business District. Its local government area is the City of Port Phillip. At the 2011 Census, Elwood had a population of 14,638. Elwood Beach is a popular bayside beach destination during summer, where the beaches are used recreationally for windsurfing, cycling, cricket and walking. The suburb has experienced ongoing gentrification, known for its mix of Edwardian and Interwar architecture character, its beaches and its leafy streets, many of which are lined by London Plane trees.

We lived in this suburb for quite a few years and this is where I went to High School, so I have some very good memories and it's always nice going back for a wander in its streets (yes, it has changed quite a lot...). Bike and walking paths by the sea are a great idea and do induce people to get out and do some exercise.
