TRIPTYCH

This is a digital composite image from three different photos, each taken from the same spot, but each photo three months apart from the previous one. Each photo section comprises a vertical third of the image. it was all put together digitally in Photoshop, by carefully stitching the images together and melding each third on top of the previous one, by adjusting the transparency of the layer.

EARTH DAY

For Earth Day today, a mosaic of four acrylic paint pouring canvases I've made, with the photographs that inspired them. I've merged the photos on top with my paintings below.

We live in a wonderful, beautiful, amazing planet and yet we do our utmost to ruin it and destroy it. Earth Day should make us stop think and change our behaviour so we can save this precious planet for the generations to come.

PRECIOUS BLUE

Semiprecious stones dazzle with their colour, but beware! All that shines is not gold. Upper left is a howlite-turquenite, which is a howlite (normaly creamy white), dyed blue to become a blue turquenite. In the middle, a labradorite, which looks much better than it really is, and finally, in the lower right lapis lazuli: The source of the precious artists' pigment, ultramarine... But a soft stone, nevertheless, which makes for jewellery easily scratched.

PLUMBAGO

Plumbago is a genus of 10–20 species of flowering plants in the family Plumbaginaceae, native to warm temperate to tropical regions of the world. Common names include plumbago and leadwort (names which are also shared by the genus Ceratostigma).

The species include herbaceous plants and shrubs growing to 0.5–2 m tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, simple, entire, 0.5–12 cm  long, with a tapered base and often with a hairy margin. The flowers are white, blue, purple, red, or pink, with a tubular corolla with five petal-like lobes; they are produced in racemes.

The flower calyx has glandular trichomes (hairs), which secrete a sticky mucilage that is capable of trapping and killing insects; it is unclear what the purpose of these trichomes is; protection from pollination by way of "crawlers" (ants and other insects that typically do not transfer pollen between individual plants), or possible protocarnivory.

Mature plumbago leaves often have a whitish residue on their undersides, a feature that can confuse gardeners. While this white material resembles a powdery mildew disease or a chemical spray deposit, it is actually a natural exudate from "chalk" glands that are found on the Plumbago species.

SPRING'S HARBINGERS

We went for a long walk along the Main Yarra Trail today. Although the weather was highly changeable with a cold morning, a couple of showers and much hide-and-seek play between the sun and the clouds, we thoroughly enjoyed the walk. There were plenty of reminders all along the way that Spring is not far away now.

ANTIQUE

Antique shops abound in Melbourne and one need not go far in order to find one and explore its treasures at leisure. Whilst Australia is a relatively young country, and therefore finds it easier to look ahead to the future, the population has also many ties to the past, with its multicultural heritage playing a very important role in shaping its future. Antique objects are a very important bridge to the past and family keepsakes handed down the generations or acquired at a shop are a powerful reminder of a family's past memories and history.
