MELBOURNE CENTRAL STATION MURAL

The mural at the Elizabeth Street concourse of Melbourne Central station is quite a striking art work that wends its way mainly along the Northern wall of the underground station. It was completed in 1991-1992 by Lesley Dickman in conjunction with other artists, and comprises 172 panels each 2.65 by 1.2 metres. The images are a melange of figures, objects and motifs that suggest industry and various occupations. A recurring motif is that of wheels, cogs and round elements. Very apt for this hub of public transport in the midst of the City.

One of the advantages of catching the very early train in to work is that station is almost deserted and one can take pictures of the mural without interference form passers by.

This post is part of the Monday Murals meme.

  1. Wow ! Fabulous captures Nick - especially to snap them without fellow travellers; you must get up REALLY early! But the results are worth your effort. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Very cool mural. You must be an early riser to be there before the crowds. Great captures.

  9. Wow. There's a lot to look at here. I'm always in awe of how artists conceptualize a work and then lay out the scheme to fit the space. It looks like they are depicting man's fascination with and reliance on machinery; then cleverly portray man as machine. I especially like the texture created by laying real gears onto the mural surface. A very engaging work that can hold your interest for a long time. Thank you for sharing this work and participating in Monday Mural.

  11. The artists went to a lot effort in order to paint detail into the mural. It's nice to travel outside of the rush hours. No crowds to interfere with your photographing or anything else.

  12. I think it is wonderful when efforts are put forth to make our surroundings interesting! This is an excellent series of murals in a place where people are more likely in a hurry coming and going. Hopefully people take the time to appreciate the effort that goes into a project like this! Very nice capture!

  22. I've been researching the history of this mural, it appears it was created by Geoff Hogg in 1984, in collaboration with Kay Douglas and Ilma Jasper:

It is also listed on the Victorian Heritage Database (ref B6821):
