CAFÉ VUE MURAL

The mural today comes from Café Vue, one of my fave cafés in the City, very close to work so it's easy to duck out with a colleague or two and have a quick meeting over a cup of good coffee. The original Café Vue offers a café menu for both breakfast and lunch featuring a range of made to order sandwiches and baguettes, high quality cakes and viennoiserie as well as exceptional coffee by 5 Senses. Full table service is offered throughout the café with a take away menu available including the signature Café Vue lunchbox.

It is located in Normanby Chambers 430 Little Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000 (between Queen & William Streets). The mural is found in a little courtyard way out the back and takes some finding, but one catches glimpses of it from New Chancery Lane that runs between Bourke St and Little Collins St.

The mural is by artist Polly Courtin. Born in Melbourne in 1951, Polly Courtin is an expressionist portraitist and art teacher. She has exhibited in Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide and Brisbane since 1974. Courtin has won several art awards and her work is represented in institutional and private collections. This is her website. I really love this mural painted in 2000, and although it is under perspex, it is still exposed to the elements, and being on canvas I don't see it surviving for a long time. A great pity...

  1. I've never been to Cafe Vue Nick. I hope the food is as unique as their mural.

  2. I'll be right nearby at the end of August when I attend a professional development course. I'll look out for it. Certainly a very expressive mural and brightly coloured. Love the little red door of the cafe too.

  7. What a cool piece to find in the courtyard. The vivid colors remind me of the Blue Rider school. Maybe it's time to move it indoors to preserve it. Thanks for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
